I Lived in All 25: Best Neighbourhoods in Seoul Ranked

Cities2 min readBy Alex Reed

Hongdae for nightlife, Itaewon for diversity, Bukchon for tradition. That's the short answer. But Seoul has 25 distinct districts, and most travel guides get them wrong because they've never actually lived there.

I spent 18 months bouncing between Seoul neighbourhoods while working remotely, and I've got opinions. Here's the real breakdown of the best neighbourhoods in Seoul, ranked by what you actually care about: location, vibe, food, and whether your laptop will survive the coffee shop WiFi.

1. Hongdae (홍대) — Best Overall for First-Timers

Vibe: University district meets creative chaos
Transit: Line 2, Airport Railroad
Daily budget: $60-120

This is where I'd send my mom if she visited Seoul. Hongdae (named after Hongik University) is Seoul's creative heart—street performers, indie bands, art markets, and some of the best Korean BBQ spots that don't rip off tourists.

The neighbourhood sits on Line 2, Seoul's most useful subway line. You can reach Gangnam in 25 minutes, Myeongdong in 15, and Incheon Airport in 40 minutes direct.

Best for: Solo travelers, digital nomads, anyone under 40
Skip if: You need quiet after 10pm (it doesn't exist here)

Category Rating Notes
Transit ★★★★★ Airport line + Line 2 = golden
Food scene ★★★★★ $8 meals to $40 omakase
Nightlife ★★★★★ Literally the point
WiFi/coworking ★★★★☆ Crowded but reliable
English-friendly ★★★★☆ Tourist-ready

💡 Pro tip: Stay near Exit 9, not Exit 1. Exit 1 is club central—you'll hear bass until 4am. Exit 9 gives you the good stuff (restaurants, cafes) without the 3am drunk singing.

Where to eat: Yeontabal (연타발) for Korean BBQ ($25/person, closes at midnight), Doran Doran (도란도란) for kimchi stew ($9).

2. Itaewon (이태원) — Best for International Food & LGBTQ+ Scene

Vibe: Seoul's most diverse neighbourhood
Transit: Line 6
Daily budget: $80-150

Itaewon is where expats, military personnel, and Koreans who've lived abroad converge. You'll find mosques nextto Mexican tacos next to gay bars next to Seoul's best burgers.

This is the best neighbourhood in Seoul if you're craving non-Korean food. The Mexican, Turkish, Indian, and Italian spots here are legit—not the sad fusion versions you get elsewhere in Seoul.

Q. Which Seoul neighbourhood has the best food scene?

Depends on what you want. For Korean food, Mapo and Euljiro have the most authentic local restaurants with the best price-to-quality ratio. For international food, Itaewon dominates—Turkish, Mexican, Indian, Italian all exist in non-fusion forms. For trendy/Instagram-worthy food, Seongsu-dong and Garosu-gil. For Korean BBQ specifically, check out Mapo-gu near Mapo Station or Yeontabal in Hongdae. Avoid Myeongdong unless you only eat street food—sit-down restaurants there target tourists and charge accordingly.
